How Does Stress Impact Your Weight Loss Efforts?

Recently published articles show there is a link between stress and gaining weight. For fast fat burning to happen in your body, your stress must be dealt with properly. Our bodies react to our internal stimuli just as they react to the external stimuli.

Cortisol, a stress-related hormone, has been associated with weight gain, especially abdominal fat. When the body is under a lot of stress it releases increased amounts of cortisol.

The most amount of fat is collected in the abdomen region when we eat under stress because receptors for cortisol are located in the abdomen. To make things worse, a higher waist-to-hip ratio has been associated with higher levels of cortisol under stress.

That translates into having to work harder to lose weight if you already are even a little on the heavy side. It means we automatically start triggering more abdominal fat storage than our leaner peers.

Metabolism is also impacted by excess cortisol. Higher cortisol levels means a slower metabolism.

Your body can’t use food energy the way it should when you have a slow metabolism.

To burn fat fast and effeciently, you must not starve yourself!

Another double whammy here:

As a rule, people eat more when they’re under stress which only contributes to the already existing problem of being overweight.

So what can you do to avoid having cortisol create a roadblock in your weight loss efforts? Try to manage your stress in a positive manner.

Don’t wait until it catches up with you to start fighting it.

A few helpful tips:

1. Raise awareness: Gain awareness of your stress triggers and reactions.
2. Get in those workouts: Exercise regularly to regulate cortisol levels. Exercise also raises our mood level. Try relaxation exercises such as guided meditations and yoga.
3. Get enough rest: Try to avoid being overly tired, your body performs better when well rested. It may mean that you make a wiser food choice the next day, and help yourself in your weight loss or maintenance plan.

It is important to note that while it is important you manage stress and cortisol levels appropriately, medication is not a recommended first option. before considering medications, try healthy changes first.

Controlling your stress is critical if you want to master your body’s innate ability for fast fat burning.
